The back stance loads 70% of the weight onto the rear foot, keeping the front leg light for quick kicks — paired with knife-hand blocks in poomsae.

The back stance (Dwitkubi Seogi) shifts the weight to the rear foot, making the front leg light, free, and ready to kick without telegraphing the movement. It is the characteristic stance of the knife-hand block (Sonnal Makgi) and appears in Taeguek Sam Jang and beyond. Because the weight is already loaded onto the rear leg, a practitioner in back stance can launch a front kick or side kick from the lead leg immediately, without first shifting weight — which makes the technique strategically significant.
