Guard
The guard is the foundational BJJ position — the bottom player uses their legs to control, attack, and sweep from the ground while the top player attempts to pass.

The guard is the defining position of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and the primary reason BJJ is so effective against larger opponents. When on the back with an opponent between the legs, the guard player is not simply defending — they are actively attacking with sweeps, chokes, joint locks, and positional control. The guard reverses the usual assumption that being on the bottom is losing: a skilled guard player has a significant offensive advantage over an inexperienced passer.
